▶ TANMAYA BINGHAM + WARATAH LAHY, CLOSING 24 DECEMBER

Last chance to see the shows by TANMAYA BINGHAM and WARATAH LAHY before they and the Gallery close for the year at 5pm on Saturday 24 December.

Tanmaya Bingham's meticulously rendered mixed media drawings feature the portraits of friends and associates. Often mistaken for photographs, the realistic portraits fuse fantastical elements drawn from around New Mexico where this series was conceived and produced.

The works from Not What it Seems, by Waratah Lahy, are based on a series of old, found photographs and continue the artist's fascination with what others find interesting enough to photograph. The palette was derived from the colour distortion that occurred to the photographs over time and the works show scenes ranging from fields dotted with cows to a church, simple domestic interiors and people at the racetrack.

Congratulations are also in order for Waratah who has been awarded a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris.

Please be aware that Gallery will be closed from 5pm December 24, reopening Wednesday, January 18 with Sculpture 2012.

▶ TANMAYA BINGHAM + WARATAH LAHY, OPENING 22 NOVEMBER

New work by TANMAYA BINGHAM and WARATAH LAHY will be on view starting Tuesday 22 November. Please join the Artists for a drink to celebrate the launch of their solo exhibitions on Saturday 26 November from 4-6pm.

Tanmaya Bingham's new body of work titled 'Countermanding Saturation' comprises six large-scale paintings and thirteen smaller works. The comical and the macabre interchange in these drawings, strive against what Bingham calls saturation, the 'emotional, physical or intellectual stimulation' of either the interior or exterior worlds.

The new paintings by Waratah Lahy continue to explore her ongoing fascination with the simplicity of the overlooked: people, places, light and colour. She finds inspiration in everyday scenes that are often lost in the deluge of contemporary visual culture.

▶ MARC STANDING + SENDEN BLACKWOOD, CLOSING 19 NOVEMBER

A timely reminder to visit the shows by MARC STANDING and SENDEN BLACKWOOD before they close on Saturday 19 November.

Marc Standing's fourth solo show with the Gallery strongly reflects the time his has spent in Hong Kong, both in content and in palette. The canvases are suddenly bright with a wash of pinks and purples but still the singular concealed figure predominates amongst the multitudes of birds, blossoming trees and lotus seeds.

We are delighted to announce that we now represent sculptor, Senden Blackwood. In addition to the collection of beautifully carved stone sculptures in his current exhibition 'ishi', Blackwood has a significant basalt sculpture installed at 'Sculpture by the Sea' which, we are pleased to report, was sold before the show opened last week.

▶ SENDEN BLACKWOOD: 'GOE'

 To me, 'goe', is an expression of movement, of wind and water or maybe even the meeting of the two.

My workspace is on the side of a beautiful dam and daily I watch swallows dart, spin and wheel, catching their dinner or delicately - while barely disturbing the surface of the water - swoop to drink; leaving behind a tiny punctuation of ripples. I've often wished I could see the sharp lines carved by a swallow swooping through the air. I can't, so instead I try to express the gesture in basalt.

New work by MARC STANDING and SENDEN BLACKWOOD will be on view starting Tuesday 25 October. Please join the Gallery for a drink to celebrate the launch of their solo exhibitions on Saturday 29 October from 4-6pm.

There is an ethereal and dreamlike quality to Marc Standing's new body of work, with it's many references to human nature and our perception of the natural world. Plants, masks, animals and cell like structures hover and drift within these dreamscapes, whilst the birds straddle between the sacred and the earthly realms and hint about what may come.

Senden Blackwood strives to carve simple forms from stone; engaging lines with dynamic planes. He maintains that his inspiration comes from "the natural world; a broken seashell, leaves in all their complexities, or simply the cracks and lines of force in pavements."

Peter Tilley's current show embodies the clean aesthetic established by the artist throughout his expansive career. The warm tones of the reclaimed timbers, which have once again resurfaced in the work, are mirrored in the oxidised metals of the outdoor sculptures he is know so well for.



The colourful assemblages by Janet Parker-Smith feature deconstructed books and dolls as well as original printmedia. The works are playful and beautifully made, producing creatures that make the familiar unfamiliar and the know unknowable.

The new body of work by Peter Tilley shifts between still life tableau and compositions based around the figure. The sculptures reflect on issues of the times and the nature of society, whilst a recurring meditation on life's opposing forces of hope/despair, real/wishful, life/death and permanence/decay continues to influence this body of work.

The deconstructed books and whimsical assemblages by Janet Parker-Smith introduce images, objects, creatures and species that hover between multiple identities. Dealing with feelings of displacement, the work examines the binary nature of insiders and outsiders, inclusion and exclusion and isolation and connection.

▶ TODD FULLER, CLOSING 27 AUGUST

The narrative threaded throughout 'Tense' emanates from the hand-drawn films, projected onto the wall in a theatrette and also on iPods within the bellies of two of the sculptures. Todd Fuller draws upon his own experiences and the animations are brimming with stories of love, loss, anxiety and isolation. The sculptures, shaped in earthenware and clay, appear to be the three-dimensional realisations of the characters in his films.

The stories of 'Tin Man' and 'Barry in the Wings' began in Paris while Fuller completed a residency at the Cité International Des Arts. From the quintessentially Parisian streets to the references of the 'Little Dancer...' by Degas, the experiences of this young artist permeate every level of the exhibition. According to Fuller, "at the end of the day the characters are my alter egos, so I am giving the audience an insight into the real and raw me."

The much anticipated exhibition by TODD FULLER will be on view starting Tuesday 2 August 2011. Please join us for a drink to celebrate the launch of his first major solo exhibition on Saturday 6 August from 4-6pm.

Fuller's work is drawn from his own personal narrative as an untraditional Australian male, however his figures engage with the everyday pitfalls that are relevant to us all. Fuller's tiny, rotund men are many things, but mostly they are just in need of a good hug.

'Tense' is a show which brings together the artist's ongoing investigation into the notions of masculinity and a showcase for the cast of misfit male characters who have resulted. His leading men are potbellied, schadenfreude worthy ceramic figures who are also the stars of Fuller's captivating hand drawn animations.

▶ LYNDAL HARGRAVE: PURCHASED BY ARTBANK

Brenda May Gallery is pleased to announce that Lyndal Hargrave's sculpture 'Juno (Queen of the Gods)' from her current exhibition 'Constructs of Love and Logic' has been acquired by Artbank for their collection.

Established in 1980, Artbank purchases contemporary Australian art in order to support and promote emerging artists. The program was initiated by the Australian Government and is now part of the Office of the Arts with over 10,000 artworks in the collection. To gain revenues to maintain and expand the collection, Artbank rents works to businesses and individuals across the country.
